See what we’ve achieved – and push for progress

From the historic docks and stunning seafront to the city centre, Portsmouth’s alive with culture and full of naval heritage. Bold regeneration projects are revitalising the city – and the buzz of change and innovation is just as strong here within our Authority. We’ve created a brand new senior role that offers outstanding experience at the highest level. As Director of Corporate Services, you’ll have the chance to lead exciting transformation in a council that’s committed to progress.

As leader of a newly formed Directorate, you’ll take charge of IT, Digital, Customer Services, Communications, HR, Legal and Democratic Services & Elections. You’ll be working across Portsmouth and neighbouring Gosport, representing the Chief Executive. Day to day, you’ll manage subject experts to provide a range of joined-up support functions. With value for money vital, you’ll think commercially and innovatively to deliver, improve and re-design services both for the council and for the other agencies we support.

IT and Digital will definitely have a big role to play. As well as driving city tech initiatives, you’ll make sure we make the most of IT to maximise efficiency. There’ll be a portfolio of high-level projects waiting here for you plus the responsibility of making sure we fulfil our legal obligations and constitutional requirements. You must therefore understand the role of Democratic Services and the Monitoring Officer, and act as a critical friend to ensure compliance. At the same time, you’ll deputise for the Chief Executive, advise senior figures, connect with strategic partners and support elected Members. This is a key part of your role that requires keen political antennae, as you use your influence to manage relationships and make our strategic agenda happen.

We’re therefore looking for substantial experience of turning strategy into positive, tangible outcomes. As a skilled senior manager, you can use visionary leadership to get the best out of teams. With a good grasp of local government, legal issues and the IT agenda, you’re a corporate thinker who’s well equipped for this challenge.
